FLOWER THAT’S THE BEST

FLOWER THAT’S THE BEST

One day, Emperor Akbar was strolling in his garden. He was thrilled at the pleasant sight of beautiful flowers swaying in the garden. As he continued to look at the, a doubt arose in his mind “Which flower among all is the best in the world?” he thought.
On the following day, while addressing the court, he posed the same question to his courtiers. He also told them that they should explain the reason and also warned that their answer should satisfy him. After thinking for a while, all those present in the ocurt came up with their answers and reasons too. Some said Rose; some said Jasmine and gave the names of all the flowers they could think of. But the Emperor was not satisfied.
He then turned to Birbal and asked him what his answer was. Birbal rose from his seat and said, “MY Lord! According to me, the flower of the cotton plant is the best. It may not have fragrance like other flowers, it may not look beautiful too but from the cotton flower, we get cotton out of which yarn is made and clothes are woven. The cotton flower is therefore of lasting use to manking, while other flowers are only of temporary value.”
Everyone in the audience, including the emperor was amazed at Birbal’s intelligent and thoughtful answer. Appreciating his thinking ability, emperor Akbar bestowed many valuables gifts to Birbal.
